Mathis Suray has delivered an exceptional week for Go Ahead Eagles, scoring crucial goals in both their historic Europa League victory against Aston Villa and a commanding 2-0 league win over Excelsior.
Suray’s Dream Week Powers Go Ahead Eagles
Mathis Suray, the attacking midfielder, has been a pivotal figure for Go Ahead Eagles in what he calls a “wonderful week.” His equaliser helped secure a historic home win over Aston Villa, a match that has already become a milestone for the club. Shortly after, Suray scored twice to clinch three points against Excelsior in the Eredivisie.
“Winning at home against Aston Villa was already fantastic, but we also wanted to take three points against Excelsior,” Suray said in an interview with Voetbal International. “For me, personally, scoring three goals in two games is incredible. That goal against Villa is among my best ever, especially since it was against one of the top goalkeepers in the world.”
From Europa League Struggles to Triumph
Earlier in the Europa League campaign, Go Ahead Eagles faced a tough challenge against FCSB. Suray admits he struggled in that match, missing multiple scoring chances. Reflecting on that game, he said it was a difficult moment, with pressure mounting as fans expected more goals from him.
“After the FCSB match, some people thought I needed to score more. I was hard on myself and it took a few days to come to terms with it,” Suray explained.
Those frustrations were replaced by elation after the victory over Aston Villa. Suray highlighted the significance of scoring against Emiliano Martínez, a renowned goalkeeper, and overcoming Unai Emery’s side, a top Europa League contender.
“That goal gave me such a beautiful feeling. We beat a big club with one of the best keepers and one of the best coaches, Unai Emery. The atmosphere that night was unforgettable.”
Impact on the Season and Career
Suray’s goals have not only boosted Go Ahead Eagles’ position but also marked a personal high. Since joining from FC Dordrecht in 2024, the 24-year-old Belgian has steadily developed into a key player, amassing 26 goals in 160 appearances across competitions.
This week’s performances underline his growing influence and potential to be a decisive force for his club in both domestic and European football.
